Why You Should Join Tom Cruise & Bill Gates on Weibo | Chengdu Living

I really like Weibo. I’ve been using it for just over a month and it’s been a lot of fun. I’ve been making friends and learning Chinese at the same time. ^_^

There are so many people on Weibo, I feel like things are happening faster than Facebook or Twitter. Almost every day I get a comment or new follow…something to keep me engaged.

As far as features go, it’s kind of a blend of Facebook and Twitter. I really like how status updates are short, though twice as long as Twitter when typing in English, and I can post photos, videos, audio, and a few other types as well.

I have an Android phone and found a good Weibo app with English menus that will also autopost to Twitter at the same time! It’s called YiBo.

For anyone interested in making friends in China and learning Chinese, Weibo is a good start. Click the via link for a good article about Weibo.

Google Translate makes reading foreign websites easy, so I setup my own Chinese blog!

There’s a lot of content on the Internet that is not in English, and a lot of it is coming from China. The number of Internet users there is staggering and more keep coming, so I decided to try a little experiment and setup a blog at one of China’s most popular websites Sina. I also setup an account at their Twitter clone Weibo which is part of Sina. It’s actually pretty slick. Blog posts are synced to Weibo which goes beyond Twitter by allowing photos, videos, music, topics, and voting. I especially like how updates can be sent directly to my Google Talk.

So far I’ve seen a pretty immediate response as far as people following my blog and Weibo posts, I think because of the large user base. Probably most can read English since they learn it in school. It’s been interesting and fun to read content posted by users in China. It’s similar to what circulates around Twitter and Facebook here. Makes the world seem a bit smaller. I’m going to keep it going and see what kind of following I get.

Minimalist Gmail extension for Google Chrome makes Gmail even better!

I’ve been using the Minimalist Gmail extension for a couple weeks now and am loving it! It’s nice to have control over every little piece of Gmail so I can decide if I want to see it or not.

I use the Minimalist Gmail extension in conjunction with Adblock Plus to get rid of ads in Gmail, which is so much nicer.

Finally, I installed the Rapportive extension and it replaces the sidebar ads with useful Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter updates from people who send me emails. Nice!

Here are my current Minimalist Gmail settings which you can copy to import into your extension:

Facebook’s Like button and the purpose of life

I decided to put a Facebook Like button at the very top of my website. In addition to clicking a Like button on a particular post, visitors can now choose to like the whole site and get an idea about it’s popularity (currently nil).

Oh well, I’ll continue as if I had readers. That way I can at least contribute something to the permanent record (Internet) for posterity and future generations. Who knows, maybe I’ll have lots of grandkids or great grandkids that want to read about me, or at least me of the past. I plan to live forever you know!

So the Facebook Like button requires some meta tags in the header of my site. One of those tags is a description of this site. I hadn’t put much thought into describing Keegoid as a whole site so this was a perfect opportunity to motivate me to do so.

What follows may sound a little crazy, but it’s the culmination of what I’ve been observing, learning, and deep-thinking about since college…distilled down to a few sentences. So it’s bound to sound fanciful without a longer explanation. Follow the links for that.

Trying to say it in as clear and concise a way as possible helped me to realize not only the purpose for this site, but also a routine of observing, learning, and sharing that I want to continue into the future.

Keegoid’s Facebook Like button meta tag description, website focus, and purpose of life:

Keegoid is currently a nickname given to me to describe my personality as being rather…well…android-like. In the future, it may have a more literal meaning: Keegan, an organic-based intelligence, improved by technology. The technological part is now and will continue to be progressing exponentially. What that means for our future as organic life forms is anyone’s guess.

During his existence Keegoid observes, learns, and shares what he discovers with other intelligences that choose to do the same. Perhaps it is a consequence of the nature of intelligence to desire significance and perhaps it is futile, but Keegoid wants to be more than a resource or step in the universe’s multi-pronged, probabilistic approach toward ever increasing complexity and energy density per second i.e. progress.

For better or worse, it will continue as it has always continued. Will Keegoid continue as well to observe, learn, and share after our purpose is fulfilled? Will Keegoid even make it that far to observe the Singularity? A computationally irreducible intelligence can only hope.
