Changfeng Park, TEFL certification, and hiking
Yesterday was the warmest day in Shanghai yet, 27C! Still a lot of smog, but nice. I walked around Changfeng Park with my friend honghong who lives nearby. I was going to jog around the park, but there were so many people! Will have to go on a weekday, not a Sunday morning.

Dirty apartments in Shanghai
You don’t know what it means to clean an apartment until you’ve lived in Shanghai. The first apartment I lived in was so dirty I didn’t even bother cleaning most of it. I cleaned areas that I just had to clean like the bathroom, floors, windows, and counters, but the walls were off limits. Black gunk and stains were smeared everywhere. They must have been from years of smokers...

One American's observations on Shanghai, China
I’ve been in Shanghai for 25 days now. This is my first time in China! So far it’s been a positive experience. People have been friendly and welcoming, and most things are pretty efficient, they have to be to accommodate so many people! I like efficient.

Remembering Fall Colors in Oregon 2011
It’s Christmas Eve and I finally have some spare time to catch up on my uploading of old photos! I took these when the Fall colors were at their peak in 2011 at my Grandparent’s property.
It’s nice to look back and remember how pretty Oregon can be at that time of year. Now everything just looks dead. :P

How to Get Bisphenol A Out of Your Body - Exercise...
So many articles about BPA discuss ways to avoid it, but what about the 91% of us that have been exposed? I’m glad to see there is hope. The formula seems to be, awareness of sources of BPA in order to reduce exposure and vigorous exercise. Apparently fat is where BPA is stored on the body. via myessentia.com Posted via web from Keegoid’s Posterous

My grandparent's estate for sale
This is my grandparent’s estate. I grew up next door. Sad to see it go up for sale, but hopefully it will go to a nice family who can take care of the property. It’s about 2 acres with a barn, separate garage, and shed. via realtor.com Posted via email from Keegoid’s Posterous

Backyard plums
I grew up eating from this 60 year old plum tree. I don’t know who planted nor it’s variety. My grandparents purchased the land in the 1950s. Some years it doesn’t produce much, luckily this year it’s producing a LOT of fruit! So delicious!! This year is likely to be the last year the property remains in my family’s name. So I may not get to eat the fruit from this...

This is a very informative report by Philip H. Howard of Michigan State University. It’s also interesting to note the still independent organic brands near the bottom. Visit the via link below to read the full report.

Working on a Peugeot. Ah, brings back high school...
My brother Mark is getting a new clutch for his 80’s Peugeot 505. If you don’t know, they’re a French car that stopped importing into the US in the late 80’s. They ride very smooth and have some nice features like leather seats and seat warmers. They’re also very easy to work on since not a lot of computer stuff.
He and dad have been working on it all day. Good thing...

Stand Up While You Read This! - NYTimes.com
Well, it’s been about four months since I switched to a standing desk, and I must say, I’m really loving it! Of course, that wasn’t the case for the first two months. My back hurt, my legs were constantly sore, and my feet hurt until I started wearing slippers or shoes without arch support, sometimes described as arch immobilizers (but that’s a different story). I no...

Hood to Coast 2011 at Seaside, Oregon
I had a fun time this year. I didn’t get to volunteer like I did last year, but I did help out with logistics. At the beach we discovered a flock of pelicans among the thousands of seagulls! They were quite large compared to the seagulls, and I could see many flying around looking for fish to snatch up. The weather was just perfect all weekend. A truly amazing time to come to the Oregon...

Okay, I’m going to learn Mandarin no matter how hard it is! As for my future kids, they will most likely grow up in a world where being able to speak both English and Mandarin will be an in-demand skill, especially in the US where so few are learning it now.

This is really so amazing! If I had millions to invest in this I would. I like the idea of bringing the crops into the cities with vertical farms. Less transportation costs, fresher produce, better control over resource utilization, controlled environments for optimal plant growth and no pesticides. Could even put the grocery store in the same building! These are huge advantages to traditional...

Family Reunion in Port Townsend, WA
It was a good trip. Had fun meeting family members I’d never met before and seeing old faces I hadn’t seen in a long time. The weather in Port Townsend was the best I’ve ever seen it! Actually, it was a bit too good because I got a sunburn.

Burgerville, my favorite fast food
Burgerville is a local fast food chain that my family has been going to for as long as I can remember. I love their high quality, tasty food that is locally sourced, fresh, and delicious. I hope she gets her new eye! Click the via link below to read about her incredible goal. Maybe it won’t be long until artificial eyes become commonplace, allowing the blind to see…maybe even better than real eyes? Guitar Oscillations Captured with iPhone 4
This is really cool!
What we’re seeing is not actually how the strings look, obviously. It’s caused by the rolling shutter effect, which is when a digital camera scans across the frame either horizontally or vertically rather than capturing the entire frame at once. So parts of the frame have to play catch up, and we’re left with guitar strings making crazy waves and shapes....

Where I grew up
Not many kids grow up with so much room to run around! I am grateful. The property includes my parent’s and grandparent’s houses. It was also good for me to grow up next to my Grandparents. I’ve helped to maintain the property for as long as I can remember: fixing fences, trimming trees, cutting down old dead trees with a chainsaw (hard work but always fun).

Yeast gene makes old cells young again - New...
That’s great! Maybe the fountain of youth is just around the corner? During sporulation, a gene called NDT80 was expressed. What’s more, switching on NDT80 in ageing cells doubled their lifespan (Science, DOI: 10.1126/science.1204349). The closest relative of NDT80 in mammals is p53, a gene that regulates cell cycles. “We may have found a way to rejuvenate cells and erase...

This cabin near Port Townsend, WA has been a part of our family for about 65 years. It was built by my great Grandfather when he was in his 70s! I’ve stayed there many times with my family on holidays like Father’s Day, family reunions, or spreading of a departed loved one’s ashes.
